Frequently asked questions.
Have questions? I’ve put together answers to the most common enquiries about our CIS tax return and bookkeeping services. Check out our FAQ section for clear, helpful guidance to make managing your taxes and finances easier.
What is a CIS tax return?
A CIS tax return is the annual self assessment tax return for construction workers and partnerships registered with the Construction Industry Scheme. It ensures you pay the correct tax and claim any refunds you’re entitled to.
Do I need to keep my CIS documents?
Yes. You should keep receipts, invoices and CIS statements for 6 years in case HMRC decide to investigate.
To calculate figures for your tax return, I can use bank statements or figures provided by you if you’re confident in them.
Can you help with HMRC penalties?
Yes. I have successfully appealed penalties for clients and saved them £1000s
How much will it cost?
My fees depend on your individual circumstances, but I always aim to provide a fair, transparent service. Get in touch for a personalised quote.
Can you do VAT submissions?
Yes, VAT returns can be submitted quarterly or monthly.
In construction, under the VAT domestic reverse charge, the customer pays the VAT directly to HMRC instead of to you.
This often results in you being in a VAT repayment position, meaning you could be due a VAT rebate on a monthly basis.
What is maxing tax digital?
A quarterly way that the self-employed will need to submit their tax returns to HMRC. This may not apply to you yet. Please get in touch if you have questions.
How long does it take to get my refund?
Once returns are submitted, most CIS refunds are paid within 10 days unless they are ‘pulled’ for security checks, which means it could take up to 6 weeks.
I will be with you every step of the way.
Do I need to be registered as self-employed?
Yes, if you’re working under CIS, you should be registered as self-employed. I can guide you if you’re unsure.
Can you help with previous years’ returns?
Yes, the past 4 years, to be exact.
What makes Hodges Tax Returns different?
I understand construction work because I’ve been there. I combine bookkeeping expertise and a degree in mathematics with site experience to give CIS workers a straight-talking, stress-free service.
